Air fryer vs countertop oven, out of the same reviews

Across six sources on the Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart and nine on the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro read by 30 September 2026, the basket fryer is the quicker, cheaper crisper and the oven is the larger machine that also bakes and roasts, with neither body of reviews supporting a claim that the two crisp alike.

The Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart (CAF-DC601) held first place on Amazon's air fryer best-seller list when we read that page on 30 September 2026, at 4.8 stars from 21,881 ratings and $119.99. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS), the countertop oven with an air-fry mode, held first place on the same retailer's convection oven list that morning. Breville's own page lists it at $319.95, and three of the four editorial tests we read price it at $400.

We read six sources on the basket machine and nine on the oven, dated 16 August 2024 to 30 September 2026. For the Cosori: the retailer's list read on 30 September 2026, three editorial reviews (Tom's Guide, published 16 August 2024, which gives it an Editor's Choice award and four stars; Bon Appetit's 2026 roundup, where it is the best air fryer the magazine tested; Good Housekeeping's picks of 30 March 2026, where it is the value choice), one forum thread, and one lower-tier hands-on write-up. For the Breville: the maker's page, four editorial tests (RTINGS, reviewed 7 February 2025 and revised 4 September 2026; Wirecutter, updated 3 October 2025; Serious Eats; Food Network), Consumer Reports' August 2026 report on air-fry toaster ovens as a class, the retailer's listing, and a Good Housekeeping toaster oven page covering a different Breville model. The buyer tier is thin on the oven side. The product page answered a bot check, so the only buyer figure we have for the Breville is the 4.5 stars from about 13,100 ratings its listing showed as we read it.

Consensus

Both machines are the ones their own evidence recommends: three of three editorial reviews on the Cosori recommend it, and all four editorial tests on the Breville place it first in its class, RTINGS calling it the best air fryer toaster oven combination it has tested and Wirecutter and Serious Eats each naming it their top pick of that kind.

What the same reading will not support is that they crisp equally. Consumer Reports, in a report revised 6 August 2026, says an air-fry toaster oven turns in pleasing results but a dedicated air fryer crisps better and can finish up to about 40 percent sooner. RTINGS, testing this exact model, reports the same gap from the other side: it air fries evenly, part of a batch can still come out underdone, and it is slower than most drawer-style air fryers. The reading is that the basket is the quicker crisper and the oven the bigger, more versatile appliance. Confidence is mixed: the Cosori rests on a large dated buyer base and three editorial endorsements of one model, the Breville on four editorial tests and a thin buyer tier.

Recurring strengths

Capacity. Breville lists a one-cubic-foot interior that takes nine slices of toast, a 13-inch pizza, a 9 by 13 inch pan or a 14-pound turkey, and RTINGS scored its cooking capacity 8.7 out of 10, the highest in the group it tested (one of four editorial tests). Cosori lists six quarts in a square basket, and two of its three editorial reviews praise the size, Tom's Guide calling the basket generous for family cooking and Good Housekeeping calling it a fit for busy families. The same Tom's Guide review says it would be too large for one person.

Cleaning. The Cosori's basket and crisper plate are dishwasher safe per the maker's listing, and Tom's Guide lists easy cleaning among its strengths (one of three). RTINGS calls the Breville's chamber non-stick and easy to clean because it is easy to reach inside (one of four).

Noise. Thin on both sides. The only figure we saw for the Cosori is a stated figure of under 60 decibels in one lower-tier hands-on write-up, which is the maker's claim and not a measurement, and none of the sources we read gives a decibel figure for the Breville. The sample supports no count here, so we report it as unknown.

Counter space. Tom's Guide's specification list gives the Cosori at 15.7 by 11.8 by 11.9 inches and 11.5 pounds, and describes it as sitting compactly on the counter (one of three). The Breville is the opposite case: RTINGS names size as its main practical drawback and says to be sure you have the space, and Food Network notes the extra room it occupies (two of four). Breville lists the body at 21.5 inches wide.

Price. The Cosori was $119.99 on the retailer page we read, and Good Housekeeping's March 2026 write-up says it often drops under $100 and names it the value choice among air fryers sold there (one of three). Breville's own page lists the oven at $319.95 against the $400 that Wirecutter, Serious Eats and Food Network each show as its United States price (three of four). On the day we read, the oven cost about two and a half times the basket machine.

Recurring complaints

On the Cosori side, Tom's Guide names two: no shake reminder, and the machine wants preheating (one of three). One lower-tier hands-on write-up adds a first-use smell and a basket tall enough to be awkward to store. Nothing in the buyer rating suggests a widespread problem, and 4.8 stars from 21,881 ratings is what the listing shows.

On the Breville side, RTINGS names slow preheating and toast that is even with four slices but uneven at full capacity (one of four). Size is a complaint in two of the four, RTINGS and Food Network, and price in three of the four, which is where the $400 figure comes from. None of the sources we read describes a safety problem with either machine.

Where reviewers split

The clearest split is between the two kinds of appliance rather than between two camps of reviewers: Consumer Reports makes the class-level case for the basket and the oven's own testers make the case for the oven. Good Housekeeping, testing a different Breville oven, the Joule, reports that its air-fry modes do not crisp as well as other models it has tested. That finding belongs to a sibling model and is not counted here. RTINGS splits against itself on toasting, even at four slices against uneven at maximum capacity.

Buyers and editors differ in what they can support. For the Cosori the buyer base is large and dated to the day we read while the editorial sample is three reviews of one model; for the Breville it is the reverse, and its buyer tier is thin because the product page answered a bot check. The forum thread we read splits along the same line: owners who keep a basket cite taking it out without oven mitts, small batches and quick cleanup, those who prefer an oven body cite a single layer and larger meals, and one commenter says they would keep both. That is a thread read as an ordinary page, not a count of owners.

Who each one is for

The basket fryer suits you if you cook for one or two, want crisping more than baking, and would rather keep the counter, and if $120 is the budget.

The oven suits you if you want toast, baking, roasting and pizza out of one box, if you regularly cook for four or more, and if you have room for a 21.5-inch body and clearance above it. It suits you if the $400 three publications list is acceptable, and if you accept that its air-fry mode is slower than a drawer machine's.
