ChatGPT Plus

Twenty dollars a month since 2023, over a free tier that now chats all day

Plus still buys the reasoning models, the heavier tool limits and an ad-free plan for $20 a month, but with Free now carrying unlimited everyday chat and Go at $8, the sources we read agree it is worth it mainly to people who meet the free caps most days.

OpenAI's pages were read on 1 October 2026 and move with each release; the two editorial reviews are from 27 January and 23 September 2026, so one of them describes a plan whose free tier was smaller and whose Pro ladder was shorter. The owner-side evidence is three forum threads from August 2026 to September 2026. The $200 Pro tier is paused for new sign-ups from 10 September 2026, so the ladder above Plus may look different within weeks.

It suits you if

  • You use ChatGPT most workdays and meet the free caps on uploads, images or files.OpenAI's help article keeps those limits separate from the everyday chat allowance, and both editorial reviews describe the same wall.
  • You want the reasoning levels inside Chat. The GPT-5.6 help article puts Medium and High on Plus and Extra High on Pro, and leaves Free and Go on Luna.

Pass if

  • You open ChatGPT a few times a week and never meet a cap.The August 2026 forum thread's own replies say the plan turns on habit, and the review site's breakdown sends that reader to Go or back to Free.
  • Free's Luna already answers what you ask. That thread asked whether the free model handles ordinary use, and the subscribers who answered yes are not paying for the same work.
  • You need the largest context or uncapped reasoning. The pricing page puts those on Pro, and the Plus help article records the $200 tier as paused for new sign-ups from 10 September 2026.
  • You want a yearly price before you subscribe. The help article describes no annual billing for Plus, and $240 a year is the figure to weigh.

The same review as one piece of writing · 7 min read

ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI's $20-a-month individual plan, and it has held that price since it launched in February 2023. What sits around it has moved: the pricing page read on 1 October 2026 lists a cheaper Go tier below it and Pro tiers above it, while the Plus help article still describes the same monthly plan at the same price.

The reading behind this piece is OpenAI's pricing page and two help articles, all read on 1 October 2026, two editorial reviews from 27 January and 23 September 2026, two news reports from 16 January and 10 February 2026, the ChatGPT app's App Store listing read the same day, one review site's breakdown of the plan's caps, and three forum threads read as ordinary pages. That is six tiers and no individual buyer review. Nothing was tested: no model was prompted, no plan bought.

Consensus

The sources agree on what the $20 buys and disagree on who should pay it.

Free and Go run GPT-5.6 Luna, the fastest and cheapest model in the family, and OpenAI's help article gives both unlimited everyday text chats while keeping separate limits on file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis. Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol at the Medium and High thinking levels, and in Work and Codex it reaches GPT-6 Astra. Both editorial reviews we read count that gap in the plan's favour: ZDNET, on 27 January 2026, prices Plus for people who use it most days, and TechRadar, on 23 September 2026, describes a Plus account reaching the newest models through the Work tab rather than Chat.

On value the reading is thinner. OpenAI's pages give the terms and nothing about outcomes. One review site's breakdown, updated on 23 July 2026, calls Plus the right tier for about 95% of users, which is OpenAI's framing repeated, not a measurement. The three forum threads are the closest thing to owner evidence: a handful of posts from August and September 2026.

Confidence is strong that Plus is the ad-free tier with the wider model and tool limits, thin on how much of that a typical subscriber uses, and thin on anything Free cannot already do for someone who opens ChatGPT a few times a week.

Recurring strengths

The reasoning models. OpenAI's pricing page and its GPT-5.6 help article both put the Sol thinking levels on paid plans, Medium and High on Plus and Extra High on Pro. Both editorial reviews count the same gap in the plan's favour.

The tool allowances, not the chat. The everyday chat allowance is unlimited on Free and Go, and the same help article names uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis as the things that keep limits of their own. The pricing page lists Plus above Free on uploads, memory, deep research and Codex, and one review site's breakdown agrees.

An ad-free plan. Two news reports, PCWorld on 10 February 2026 and PCMag in January 2026, both state that ads run on Free and Go while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay without them. One editorial review, ZDNET, counts the same distinction.

Priority during peak hours. The Plus help article lists priority access and faster response speeds, and ZDNET counts the same in the plan's favour.

Recurring complaints

No yearly price for Plus. The help article gives $20 a month, billed monthly, puts API usage outside the plan, and describes no annual option, so $240 a year is the figure to weigh. One review site's breakdown agrees.

The $8 Go tier covers the light user. One review site's breakdown names Go as the plan for people who meet the free limits but need nothing further, and calls it the tier that undercuts Plus. ZDNET made the same case on 27 January 2026.

The ceiling is still reachable. A heavy session can meet the Plus cap, and the step above it is $100 or $200. OpenAI's Plus help article records a pause on new sign-ups to the $200 Pro tier from 10 September 2026, and the September 2026 forum thread reports fewer interruptions rather than none.

Chat and Work are hard to tell apart. TechRadar, on 23 September 2026, describes two screens sharing one interface where the newer models live on one side only.

Where reviewers split

Is $20 the right tier, or is Free enough? ZDNET keeps Plus as the pick for anyone who works in ChatGPT most days and would meet the free caps. The forum threads pull the other way: the August 2026 r/ChatGPT thread, which asked what Plus gives the average person, drew 96 comments from daily subscribers and from readers who say Free covers their questions. Our read: both describe the same plan honestly, and the difference is how often the reader opens it.

Ads on a paid plan. OpenAI's line is that Plus and Pro stay ad-free, and the two news reports confirm that is the published position. One r/ChatGPTcomplaints thread, dated 28 February 2026, has paying subscribers saying they saw ad-shaped placements, with others replying that they saw none. Nothing we read sizes how often that happens.

Versions move faster than the plan. TechRadar describes GPT-6 arriving in Work and Codex rather than Chat; OpenAI's pages describe that arrangement, with GPT-6 Astra listed for Plus in Work and Codex while Chat keeps the Sol thinking levels. Both are right, and any review of a plan like this is short-lived by design.

Earlier readings against the pages today. ZDNET's review describes a shorter Pro ladder and a smaller free tier. The pages read on 1 October 2026 show Free on unlimited everyday chat and two Pro tiers. Only sources describing the plan as it stands on the date read are counted, which leaves one editorial review in the sample.

Who it suits

You use ChatGPT most workdays and meet the free caps on uploads, images or files. OpenAI's help article keeps those limits separate from the everyday chat allowance, and both editorial reviews describe the same wall.

You want the reasoning levels inside Chat. The GPT-5.6 help article puts Medium and High on Plus and Extra High on Pro, and leaves Free and Go on Luna.

You want a paid plan that carries no ads. Two news reports and the pricing page's own notes put the ad-free line at Plus and above.

You write code alongside the chat. Codex appears in the pricing page's Plus column, and one forum thread works through the same use.

Who should pass

You open ChatGPT a few times a week and never meet a cap. The August 2026 forum thread's replies say the plan turns on habit, and the review site's breakdown sends that reader to Go or back to Free.

Free's Luna already answers what you ask. That thread asked whether the free model handles ordinary use, and the subscribers who said yes are not paying for that work.

You need the largest context or uncapped reasoning. The pricing page puts those on Pro, and the Plus help article records the $200 tier as paused for new sign-ups from 10 September 2026.

You want a yearly price before you subscribe, and Plus does not have one. The help article describes no annual billing for Plus, and $240 a year is the figure to weigh.

This is a reading of published reviews, not medical, financial or legal advice. For a decision about your health, your money or your rights, a qualified professional is the right next step, and not a review.
