Samsung Galaxy A17 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is the phone Samsung sells in the United States for $199.99: a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, three rear cameras with stabilisation on the main one, and six years of operating system and security updates. Counterpoint Research's model sales tracker for the second quarter of 2026 ranks it sixth among the world's best-selling smartphones, behind five Apple models, Samsung's sub-$100 Galaxy A07 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra. It is the best-selling Samsung in the affordable half of the range, and its reviews place it at the bottom edge of the mid-range.

Six editorial reviews were read in full, published from 18 August 2025 to 16 May 2026: PCMag, WIRED, CNET, Android Authority, PhoneArena and GSMArena. Beside them we read Samsung's product and store pages, one industry sales report, one retailer listing for its headline figures, and one forum thread, all on 16 September 2026. Five of the six tested the 4GB configuration sold in the US, and GSMArena says its verdict reflects the 4GB version and that the 6GB model may fare better. The buyer tier is thin: the listing carries a headline rating and no complaint counts, and no buyer review was read one by one.

Consensus

The six reviews agree on the shape of the phone and disagree on what to do about its speed. All six count the update promise in its favour, and Samsung's page confirms six operating system upgrades and six years of security updates. Against that, every one of the six raises the processor or the memory: PCMag lists both among its cons while still making the phone its top pick for an affordable handset, and the others describe stutter in ordinary use. Four of six note how little separates it from the model it replaces. We read this as a well-made, long-lived, slow phone whose screen and software support are its case and whose 4GB configuration is its cost. The reviews span nine months and the price has not moved: Samsung's store page still lists $199.99.

Recurring strengths

Update support, six of six. Samsung lists six operating system upgrades and six years of security updates, and CNET calls that unmatched at the price.

The screen, five of six. A 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 1080p and 90Hz. PCMag calls it sharp and vivid, CNET a highlight, and Android Authority says you forget its refresh rate and brightness until you stand in direct sunlight. PhoneArena's lab measured it at over 1,000 nits and calls that okay for the price class.

Battery life, five of six. PCMag's rundown test, streaming 1080p at full brightness, ran 15 hours 45 minutes. WIRED reports a full day of heavy use and a second day of light use. PhoneArena's lab scores it 8.1 against a price-class average of 7.8.

The main camera, four of six. PCMag calls the cameras impressive for the money, WIRED says the 50MP sensor is detailed and not oversaturated, CNET lists good photos for the price, and GSMArena calls the main camera decent.

Build and the card slot, four and three of six. PCMag points to Gorilla Glass Victus, WIRED says drops of under two feet left no damage, and GSMArena says it feels nearly premium for the segment. Samsung lists the microSD slot too.

Recurring complaints

Performance and memory, six of six. All six raise the processor or the RAM, and four describe the phone struggling in use. WIRED writes that app launches, the notification drawer and social feeds stutter and that apps reloaded in the background, and scores it 5 out of 10. CNET reports navigation and music breaking each other. Android Authority says the chip struggles with the lightest loads. GSMArena calls the 4GB variant laggy. PCMag's Geekbench 6 run put it at 2,054 multi-core, barely ahead of the model it replaces at 2,020 and behind the Moto G 2026 at 2,075. In the one forum thread, owners describe the same stutter, and the replies that call the phone fine mostly name a 6GB or 8GB variant. Buyer reviews are not counted here: the listing shows a rating and no complaint counts.

Little changes from last year's model, four of six. GSMArena lists no notable upgrades, PCMag devotes a section to how little the phone moved year over year, Android Authority notes the same chip, memory and storage, and CNET says the configuration matches one from two years earlier.

A screen below its rivals, three of six. Its 90Hz and 800 nits sit under what rivals offer, and PCMag looked for shade outdoors.

The second and third cameras, three of six. PCMag finds the 5MP ultrawide less sharp than the main camera and the 2MP macro muddy, WIRED says to skip both, and Android Authority calls the cameras inflexible. Video stops at 1080p at 30 frames a second.

One speaker and two missing sockets, three of six. GSMArena lists the lack of stereo speakers, WIRED finds the mono speaker easy to block, and CNET's table lists no headphone jack. No review found wireless charging.

Slow charging, two of six. Android Authority lists it as a con, and PhoneArena's lab gives charging 5.7 against a price-class average of 6.6. PCMag measured 26 percent in 15 minutes, 50 percent in 30 minutes and a full charge in 90.

Where reviewers split

On the verdict. PCMag makes the A17 5G an Editors' Choice and its top pick for an affordable phone at 4 out of 5. Four others are cooler: WIRED scores it 5 out of 10, CNET 6 out of 10, Android Authority says it is still good value, but barely, and GSMArena's verdict calls it far from competitive at its price. Our read: they weigh the same trade-off differently, which is what $200 does.

On which variant. Four reviews describe stutter and all four tested the 4GB model, with GSMArena saying outright that the 6GB version may be better. In the forum thread, the owners reporting a smooth phone name a 6GB or 8GB variant, and PhoneArena, which reviewed an 8GB configuration, still scores heavy performance below average. Our read: the memory is the variable, and the version sold at $199.99 has the least of it.

On the screen. Five reviews praise it and GSMArena calls it basic. Both can be true: a 90Hz, 800-nit AMOLED is a strong screen at $200 and an ordinary one a step up.

On battery capacity. PCMag lists 5,200 mAh; WIRED, CNET and GSMArena all give 5,000. Our read: three sources agree, and we report the capacity only as what they list.

On buyers against editors. The listing shows 4.0 out of 5 from 1,914 ratings while the editorial sample splits over the same phone. Our read: a headline rating says how a phone is rated, not what the people rating it complained about.

Who it suits

You want the longest software support $200 buys. Samsung lists six operating system upgrades and six years of security updates, and six of six reviews name it.

You want a large, sharp screen at the low end. Five of six praise the display.

You use a phone for one thing at a time: calls, messages, photos, video. The complaints are about two apps running together.

Who should pass

You keep two apps running together, or you expect a phone to still feel quick next year. Four of six reviews describe stutter, and PhoneArena's heavy-performance score is below its price class average.

You want a good second camera or a zoom. Three of six criticise the ultrawide and the macro, and there is no telephoto.

You want fast charging. Two of six call charging slow, and the lab score for it is below average.

You still use wired headphones, or you want to charge without a cable. Three of six note the single speaker, and no review found a headphone jack or wireless charging.
