Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 is the foldable this year's reviewers spent the longest on, and it is the one that changed shape. It was announced on 22 July 2026 and went on sale on 7 August 2026 at $1,899.99, with a 5.5-inch cover screen when shut and a 7.6-inch 4:3 screen when open, at a listed 201 g, the maker's lightest Fold. We read eight editorial reviews, dated 30 July 2026 to 26 September 2026, three news reports from 30 July to 13 August, the maker's launch release and its two US pages, and one page load of the ratings on its own US store. No owner thread we could read carried a date we could cite, so the owner tier is that rating and nothing more.

The shape is agreed on almost everywhere, and so are the complaints, which are about what the new shape cost: a telephoto camera, a dust rating, a stylus and the half-folded stand the earlier Folds kept. Confidence is strong on the editorial tier and thin on owners.

Consensus

Across the eight editorial reviews, the form factor is the finding, and seven of them lead with it: a phone that closes into a pocket and opens into a small tablet, with a 4:3 inner screen that suits video and reading better than the tall panels of earlier Folds. Performance is called fast in four of the eight. Battery life is counted a strength in three of the eight. The subtractions are counted too: no telephoto camera in six of the eight, the IP48 ingress rating in three, gaming heat in three, no Flex Mode in three, no S Pen support in two, and no Qi2 magnets in one. Nothing in the sample is a safety complaint.

Recurring strengths

The shape, in seven of the eight editorial reviews. CNN Underscored, Tech Advisor, Tom's Guide, Mashable, Android Central, How-To Geek and Android Authority each lead with it. The maker's launch release lists the Fold8 at 201 g, against 215 g for the Fold8 Ultra.

Performance, in four of the eight. Tom's Guide, Android Central, How-To Geek and Android Authority describe it as quick in ordinary use, on the chip the Galaxy S26 models share.

Battery life, in three of the eight. Tech Advisor calls it solid, Tom's Guide calls it longer, and Android Authority records eight to ten hours of screen-on time.

The crease on a new unit, in three of the eight. Tom's Guide, How-To Geek and Android Authority describe the fold line as flatter than on any earlier Fold, How-To Geek qualifying that as how it looks while the phone is new.

Recurring complaints

No telephoto camera, in six of the eight editorial reviews. Tom's Guide, Android Central, Mashable, Tech Advisor, How-To Geek and Android Authority each list it. Android Authority describes the rear array as two 50 MP cameras, a main and an ultrawide, with zoom past about 3x going digital.

The ingress rating, in three of the eight, and in an August teardown. Samsung lists the Fold8 at IP48, which SammyGuru describes as covering water and particles of 1 mm and larger. Tom's Guide calls the absence of dust resistance annoying, Android Authority lists the poor rating among what it does not like, and How-To Geek names sand and pocket crumbs as what it still lets in. On 13 August 2026 SammyGuru reported an iFixit teardown in which powder finer than the rating covers reached the hinge, after which it ground and the phone lost its normal opening. No source we read counts affected units, and a count of complaints is not a failure rate.

The crease returning, in two of the eight and in two reports. How-To Geek notes the improvement while the phone is new, and Android Authority still sees the line from the side and with the screen off. Tom's Guide's check of 30 July 2026 describes a visible rut after seven days of folding, and Gizmochina reported on 1 August 2026 that a rival panel held its crease better. How common it is is unknown: no source we read counts it.

Gaming heat, in three of the eight. Tech Advisor says gaming performance could be better, Android Central says to expect heat under games, and Android Authority kept only 46 to 49% of performance across three stress runs.

The price, in two of the eight. How-To Geek and Android Authority call $1,899 a lot for a phone that drops features the previous generation carried. Its US pages list $1,899.99 for 256 GB, $2,099.99 for 512 GB and $2,499.99 for 1 TB.

Where reviewers split

The crease, judged on a new unit against a week of folding. Tom's Guide, How-To Geek and Android Authority call the fold line the flattest on any Fold, judging new units. Tom's Guide's own check a week later and Gizmochina's comparison found the line visible again after days of folding, with a rival panel holding its line better. Both are true of the same phone at different ages.

The camera. How-To Geek and Android Central call the two 50 MP cameras solid for everyday photographs. Tom's Guide, Tech Advisor, Mashable and Android Authority name the missing telephoto as the loss. The two positions are about different photographs, one taken close and one taken far.

The price. Tom's Guide and Android Central call the Fold8 the foldable most people should buy, and CNN Underscored calls it a favourite. How-To Geek and Android Authority say $1,899 is too much for what was removed. Neither side is the typical owner: the rating on the maker's own store page, 4.9 from 2,255 reviews with 70% recommending it, is the third voice.

How much of One UI anyone wants. Android Central calls the AI features the least interesting part of the phone and Tech Advisor says the software needs tweaks. How-To Geek and Android Authority call the same software the best of Samsung's, with My FanCam singled out as the feature worth having.

Who it suits

You want one device that is a phone in a pocket and a video screen in the hand. Seven of the eight editorial reviews lead with the shape.

You keep a phone for years and want the maker's update promise, which Android Authority lists among what it likes.

You carry a case anyway, so magnets inside the phone are not part of your setup. How-To Geek lists their absence as a con, and a case answers it.

Who should pass

You photograph at a distance. Six of the eight reviews name the missing telephoto camera, and Android Authority finds zoom past about 3x not worth using.

You work where sand, flour or fine dust is in the air. Tom's Guide, How-To Geek and Android Authority all raise the ingress rating, and the teardown of 13 August 2026 showed what fine powder does to the hinge.

You want a stylus, or a screen that stands half-folded. How-To Geek and Android Authority note the missing S Pen, and Android Central, How-To Geek and Android Authority the missing Flex Mode.

You want the Ultra's camera and battery at the same price. The maker's launch release lists the Fold8 Ultra with a 200 MP main camera and a 5,000 mAh cell, where Android Authority lists the Fold8 at 4,800 mAh.
