Apple iPhone 17 Pro, 256GB

We read the iPhone 17 Pro, the 256GB aluminium-bodied model Apple put on sale on 19 September 2025 for $1,099, across the year of writing that followed it, from launch week to the month before its successor arrives. It weighs 206 g.

Our sample is 17 sources read on 24 September 2026: four Apple pages, from the launch release to the security index; seven editorial write-ups published between 17 September 2025 and 13 August 2026; three news reports on the finish; two owner threads read as ordinary pages; and one retailer page load. The buyer tier is thin and we say so: a single Best Buy listing, read once.

Consensus

The year did not overturn the launch verdict, it sorted it. Across the seven editorial write-ups we read, six raise battery life, three credit the vapour chamber for cooler sustained performance, and two describe the front glass taking a caseless year its predecessors did not. The finish runs the other way: the launch reviews call the body sturdy, and the later ones report chips, scuffs and, on the orange finish, fading.

We read the year as a phone whose engineering held and whose surface did not. The frame wear is real and repeatedly reported, and no source we could reach counts how often it happens. Two of the seven editorial write-ups say the year brought no strong reason to move from an iPhone 16 Pro, and the 256GB model still shows $1,099.99 on the retailer listing we read, against $1,099 at launch.

Confidence: strong for the battery and the cooling, which every tier we could read supports; thin on owners, where two threads and one page load sit; provisional, because the software is still moving and the iPhone 18 Pro is weeks away.

Recurring strengths

Battery life. Six of the seven editorial write-ups raise it, from launch week to August 2026. Two independent tests give figures: Tom's Guide measured 15 hours 32 minutes of web browsing at 150 nits, against 14 hours 7 minutes for the iPhone 16 Pro on the same test, and PCMag measured 27 hours 42 minutes on its own test. A February 2026 four-month piece says its writer now charges every two or three days. On the retailer listing, the platform's own tag counts name camera quality 60 times and overall performance 56, with battery life third at 37, on a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 206 reviews.

Cooling under sustained load. Three of the seven editorial write-ups name the vapour chamber as the fix for the thermal complaints that followed the 15 and 16 Pro. Engadget spent its review trying to make the phone run hot and came away impressed; a December 2025 three-month piece calls the liquid cooling the part that has been clutch. Owners in a 24 June 2026 forum thread describe the same behaviour: warm under gaming and fast charging, no throttling in ordinary use, which we count as what owners describe, not as a rating.

The front glass, if not the frame. Two of the seven single out the screen covering. The December 2025 piece says it stopped the small scratches its older iPhones collected, and the August 2026 year-later piece reports faint scratches only, on a phone carried caseless for close to twelve months, where its 16 Pro was visibly scratched after three weeks. Apple's launch claim of three times better scratch resistance is the tier 1 source for the coating itself.

Recurring complaints

The finish. The complaint the year's sources return to is the surface of the aluminium body. Two of the seven editorial write-ups mention frame wear: the year-later piece reports chips along the edges of a caseless phone, and a March 2026 review warns the wide camera plateau leaves more of the body exposed than the previous design. Three dated news reports carry it: paint chipping on coloured models, 22 September 2025; the colour problem expected to return on the next model, 15 June 2026; and a reviewer reproducing the orange-to-pink shift with bleach and peroxide-based cleaners, 12 July 2026, after a PCMag editor attributed it to oxidation. An owner thread read on 24 September 2026 describes the same shift, the owner posting a warranty replacement, with replies split between owners who see no change and owners who see it. No source we read counts how many phones are affected, so the frequency is unknown.

Apple Intelligence is still arriving. Two of the seven editorial write-ups raise it as a reason to wait rather than a feature to buy: the three-month piece lists more Apple Intelligence features as still awaited, and the March 2026 review calls the enhancements unimpressive.

The telephoto in low light. One editorial reviewer, three months in, names the telephoto as the lens that could do better in low light: one reviewer's view, not a theme.

Where reviewers split

Sturdy in the first week, scuffed in the twelfth month. Engadget's launch review calls the redesigned body durable, and the March 2026 review still describes the phone as comfortably built. The August 2026 piece reports chips on the edges. Our read: both describe the same body, which survives drops and resists scratching on the glass, while the sharp edge of the camera plateau gives way first.

A fault, or household chemistry. The July 2026 piece needed bleach and an oxygen-based cleaner to turn its orange unit pink, while the year-later reviewer reports no fading on his own unit. The most direct evidence that the shift happens by itself is an owner thread where the affected areas are exactly the ones a case leaves uncovered. Both readings can hold: the coating is sensitive to something, and nobody has counted how sensitive.

What twelve months of software changed. Apple's pages are the dated record. The phone shipped with iOS 26 and now runs iOS 26.6.1, dated 17 August 2026. iOS 26.5.1, on 1 June 2026, fixed wired charging on iPhone 17 models when the battery was nearly drained, and iOS 26.6, on 27 July 2026, fixes bugs and prepares the Spotlight index for iOS 27. The launch reviews judge iOS 26, and the year-later one describes a phone running a little warmer on the iOS 27 beta: our read is that the year in software was maintenance, not new capability.

Who it suits

You, if you keep a phone three or four years. Six of the seven editorial write-ups praise the battery, the year-later review says the phone still feels current, and Apple's support pages show the software is still maintained.

You, if you want the Pro Max's battery without the Pro Max. Tom's Guide's test puts the 17 Pro at 15 hours 32 minutes, one hour and 25 minutes better than the 16 Pro on the same test.

You, if you shoot a lot. PCMag lists sharp and powerful cameras and advanced video tools among its pros, and the plateau that made room for the battery is the design the durability complaints are about.

Who should pass

Pass if you already carry an iPhone 16 Pro. Two of the seven editorial write-ups say the day-to-day speed difference is marginal and the year brought no strong reason to move.

Pass if a scuffed frame would bother you, or if Cosmic Orange is the reason you want this phone. The complaint of the year is about the finish, and the reports range from a warranty replacement to an owner of the same colour reporting no change.

Pass if Apple Intelligence is what you are buying. Two of the seven editorial write-ups say the features are still landing.
